How to read this

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of visible light that passes through the film + glass combination. A 35% VLT means 35% of light gets through. Lower percentage = darker tint.

Front side windows (driver and front passenger) are the most regulated because of police visibility into the vehicle.

Back side and rear windowsare usually less regulated because they don’t affect law enforcement view of the driver.

SUVs, vans, trucks, and commercial vehicles often have separate (usually more permissive) rules. Check your state.

Medical exemptions are available in most states for UV-sensitive medical conditions. Documentation requirements vary.

Authoritative sources

Every VLT limit above traces back to a state-level statute or regulation. The AS-1 line on the windshield is a federal standard. Verify locally before quoting work.

  • AS-1 line (windshield top tint zone) — Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205 (49 CFR § 571.205) sets the AS-1 marking standard for automotive glazing. Read on eCFR.
  • Federal vehicle safety regulations — NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) publishes federal motor vehicle safety standards. nhtsa.gov/laws-regulations.
  • State DMV verification — most state DMVs publish current tint regulations under "Vehicle Equipment Standards" or similar. Search "[your state] window tint law" + ".gov" for the primary source.
